How To Combat Postpartum Fatigue – With BetterYou (AD)

Postpartum Fatigue

As a new parent, you’re bound to have endless conversations about how much sleep you get, how tired you are and how to overcome postpartum fatigue. There is no miracle remedy that will make your baby sleep through the night so you can get some decent shuteye. Believe me, I’m still trying! But there are supplements you can take to combat postpartum fatigue and boost your everyday energy.

BetterYou have kindly gifted me their Iron Oral Spray and Boost Vitamin B12 Oral Spray. I’ve been using the sprays almost daily for the past two months and have definitely seen an increase in my energy levels!

Why Is Iron Important?

Iron is important in making red blood cells which transport oxygen around the body. A lack of iron can result in a condition called iron deficiency anaemia.

I had anaemia before I was pregnant, and shortly after giving birth I ended up in A&E with chest pains (apparently very common postpartum). In A&E they did some tests to find out what was wrong with me and the blood test detected that my iron count was dangerously low. I was sent away with some iron tablets but I didn’t take them as I struggle to swallow tablets. I also had some liquid iron that I took occasionally. But not consistently enough to make a difference.

According to the NHS, you are more susceptible to iron deficiency anaemia if you are pregnant, are a woman who has heavy periods or lack a sufficient amount of iron in your diet. After giving birth you are more likely to be low in iron as you’ll experience a few weeks of vaginal bleeding (lochia).

BetterYou Iron Oral Spray

The BetterYou Iron Oral Spray is so convenient to take. Especially as a parent as the size is ideal for keeping on my bedside table. This allows me to administer the spray first thing in the morning to give me a natural energy boost. To use the spray the instructions recommend shaking it really well and spraying it on the inside of your cheek. I never thought I’d say iron tastes nice but this spray tastes damn good! It is a baked apple flavour and contains no artificial colours or flavours.

As I mentioned in this blog post, baby-brain is still very real! My daughter is now one year old, and my memory is still shocking. This means I don’t always remember to take my BetterYou supplements. As I do have iron deficiency anaemia I’ve noticed when I don’t have the Iron Daily Spray I actually feel sick!  Nausea, tiredness and a lack of energy are just a few symptoms of iron deficiency anaemia. This NHS website details further information about the condition.

BetterYou recommends taking their Daily Oral Iron Spray as it is a fast and effective way to absorb the much-needed nutrient without the digestive discomfort and poor absorption that can be associated with ingested iron.

Why Is Vitamin B12 Important?

Since becoming a parent I don’t think a single day has gone by where I haven’t said I’m tired! I AM TIRED ALL THE TIME! I wrongly assumed postpartum fatigue would improve when my daughter started to sleep through, ha! That didn’t last long before sleep regression started. My one-year-old now wakes up at least twice a night for a nappy change (and/or teething, or just fun the fun of it) so I’m constantly exhausted.

Vitamin B12 deficiency is a type of anaemia that causes the body to produce abnormally large red blood cells that cannot function properly. Some of the symptoms of Vitamin B12 deficiency include extreme tiredness and a lack of energy. It also included problems with memory (which could explain my constant baby brain!) and psychological problems such as depression. (Source: NHS). I’ve had an ongoing battle with postnatal depression since January 2019. And although I thought I had recovered when I wrote this blog post, I sometimes feel like I have reverted. This is made worse when I’m tired!

A lack of sleep can have a huge impact on your physical and emotional wellbeing as many parents know. And even when you get enough sleep, being deficient in iron and vitamin B12 can leave you feeling exhausted! Most days I wake up tired! As parents, we put our children first and don’t even consider if there are any underlying issues contributing to postpartum fatigue or our mental health. And something as simple as a spray can make a big difference in boosting our everyday energy.

BetterYou Boost B12 Oral Spray

Vitamin B12 is vital in supporting the body’s ability to combat tiredness and fatigue, but the nutrient is notoriously difficult to obtain through diet alone. The Boost B12 oral spray is an apricot flavour and the taste actually reminds me of fromage frais. To administer the spray, you shake it well and spray 4 doses on the inside of your cheek. The packaging states that the droplets are formulated to be absorbed directly into the bloodstream and is clinically proven to be absorbed faster than tablets.

It has been quite a few years since I had my kids, but I do find myself lacking energy a lot. I’m sure one of these would help me.

Great tips! Iron was a biggie for me after all three of my pregnancies. I think we’re often so focused on caring for our new baby that we forget about ourselves.
